Panels & repairs

Do You Need a Panel Upgrade or Just a New Circuit?

A new appliance, EV charger, or renovation can lead to the same question: does the whole electrical panel need to be upgraded? The answer depends on the existing system and the work you are planning. Start with an assessment of the job rather than assuming either a small repair or a full replacement is the answer.

Explain the goal before choosing the solution

Tell your electrician what you want to add and how the space will be used. A new receptacle for everyday use, a workshop circuit, and a home charger are different requests. Equipment model numbers and the installation location help define the discussion.

Also mention other projects you expect to do soon. It is easier to discuss the whole plan during the assessment than to discover an additional requirement after the first job has been quoted.

Make the symptoms part of the conversation

If you are calling because of a problem, describe what happens and when. Does one breaker trip when particular equipment runs? Do several rooms lose power together? Does the issue happen continuously or only occasionally?

The Electrical Safety Foundation identifies frequent breaker trips as a warning sign that deserves attention. A symptom is a reason to investigate, not a diagnosis of the entire system. If there is smoke, fire, or another immediate hazard, stay clear and contact emergency services or your utility as appropriate.

Ask what the proposed work actually changes

A circuit addition, a panel replacement, and a service upgrade are different scopes. Ask your electrician to explain which work is recommended and why. A quote should make clear which equipment is being replaced and what is remaining.

If the proposal involves service equipment, discuss any anticipated outage, utility coordination, and permit or inspection arrangements. These details depend on the property and should be included in the planning conversation.

Prepare for a useful site visit

Send the project address, a photo of the panel exterior, and a short description of the issue or new equipment. Do not remove covers or touch wiring to take photos. Tell us about access restrictions and whether the building has a landlord or property manager.

Before accepting an estimate, ask about materials, scheduling, exclusions, and what happens if additional conditions are found. The goal is a scope you understand, with the work matched to your property.
